Chinese manual alphabet, Chinese finger syllabary and development of Chinese literacy skills

This chapter we critically analyse and research on the Chinese Manual Alphabet, Chinese Finger Syllabary, and Chinese Sign Language, particularly on their relationship to the acquisition and development of Chinese literacy. We suggest that future researchers keep in mind the nonunitary, complex nature of the construct of literacy and be cognizant of demography and individuals differences. We strongly recommend an awareness of the development of Chinese literacy by incorporating findings from research on typical Chinese literacy learners. It is our hope that this leads to a better understanding and development of literacy skills for Chinese deaf and hard of hearing individuals.
