Werner De Saeger over burgerschap en onderwijs in de strijd tegen de radicale islam

2018
Prof De Saeger predicts that moslims will represent 20% of the Belgian population. He warns against the ultraorthodox versions of islamic as wel as jewish religions. The state should not subsidize any religious institutions nor humanist counsellors. Politicians and opinion makers should promote a common set of civil values, but, he says, we have not enough qualified teachers even in higher education. Correcting his statement I point to the courses of morals and citizenship in the state schools (GO!); their teachers often have a bachelor or master degree in Moral Sciences (Ghent University). Humanist counsellors and associations promote ideas of a harmonious society, against religious radicalism; so it is a paradox that De Saeger calls for their public financing to be abolished. Incl. references to courses, associations.
