Tumor central de células gigantes en mandíbula: reporte de un caso clínico. Central giant-cell tumor of the jaw: A case report.

Giant-cell lesions are a group of diverse pathologies of unknown etiology , ones that are poorly understood and diffi cult to diagnose due to their similar clinical and histologic characteristics. The group includes giant-cell tumors, central giant-cell granulomas, peripheral giant-cell granulomas, the brown tumor of hyperparathyroidism, cherubism, and aneurysmal bone cysts. In the following article, we look at a case involving the surgical removal of a giant-cell tumor of the jawbone. The patient is a 27-year-old white female, treated for swelling of the anterior region of the mandible by the Surgery and Traumatology Service of the «Jose Francisco de San Martin» Teaching Hospital in December 2013. X-rays revealed an osteolytic lesion with total loss of bone in the region of the anterior basal bone, at the level of the symphysis menti, extending from tooth 45 to 34. A decision was made to perform an incisional biopsy, which resulted in a defi nitive diagnosis that allowed the subsequent performance of the corresponding surgical procedure. The biopsy and the radiographic characteristics at diff erent points of the lesion led to the conclusion that this was a case of central giant-cell tumor. We recommend an incisional biopsy be performed to enable the defi nitive histopathological diagnosis of certain lesions and the implementation of a safe and appropriate plan of treatment.
