Study of mental intervention on the decrease of blood donation reactions in college students

2009
Objective To study the effect of comprehensive mental intervention on the decrease of blood donation reaction among college student blood donors. Methods Symptom check list 90(scl-90) and a self-made questionnaire survey before and after blood donation were conducted among 500 first time blood donors on campus, who were assigned to intervention group and control group(250 donors in each group) randomly. Before blood donation, the donors in intervention group received mental intervention, while the control group just received regular help. Results A total of 326 valid questionnaires were collected. In the intervention group, the rate of blood donation reaction was 1.75%(4/228),and in the control group, the rate was 7.14%(6/98),which showed a significant difference from the rate of the intervention group(P0.05).Conclusion The rate of blood donation reaction is relatively high among blood donors on campus.Comprehensive mental intervention could decrease the rate of blood donation reaction.
