Two cases of Duane's retraction syndrome with cosmetically unsightly upshoots in adduction were eliminated by lateral rectus muscle fadenoperations. The pathogenesis and treatment of upshoots and downshoots in this syndrome is reviewed and the effectiveness of a fadenoperation on a single rectus rather than on two horizontal recti is confirmed
