Modeling the cooling of smooth polymeric pipes

2012
A mathematical model is proposed for the cooling of a smooth extruded polymeric pipe; this model makes it possible to determine the temperature field of the pipe without use of the coefficient of heat transfer from its surface to the cooling water. Results of numerical modeling are obtained for limiting alternate schemes of convective cooling of the pipe in a water bath, when the water within the bath is stationary, and moving together with the pipe. The model makes it possible to determine the length of the cooling bath to achieve the required temperature distribution throughout the wall thickness of the pipe, or (for a bath of a certain length) calculate the temperature field over the wall thickness of the pipe where it emerges from the bath.
