THE QUEEN'S STAND AT EPSOM.

1996
The Queen's Stand at Epsom racecourse is a complex multifunctional building whose design was driven by a combination of the vision of its architect, Richard Horden, and the compelling need for buildability within a limited time-frame. The Derby race meeting is held in June and is a fixed point in the social, as well as the racing, calendar. It was necessary to construct the new stand without disruption of this annual event. The paper describes how this was achieved, giving emphasis to the multidisciplinary nature of the task and the various problems which had to be overcome. A two-stage construction in reinforced concrete was decided upon, with a vertical division between the stages to permit continued use of the old Club Stand concurrently with the start of work on its successor. Planning of the structure, services and circulation ensured that as far as possible complex and time-consuming features were excluded from the second stage, which occupied the site of the old stand. Geotechnical, structural and services engineering are discussed briefly, and a number of constructional features of interest are described.
