Corner wear of a hob tooth occurs at the flank of the corner between the side cutting edge and round tip one. This corner wear often becomes the largest kind of wear of a hob tooth, resulting in the shortening of the hob life. For analyzing the mechanism of the corner wear, it is necessary that the cutting conditions of the tooth with large corner wear are clarified. In this paper, a contour map of undeformed chip thicknesses is drawn by analyzing the geometrical mechanism of the hobbing process, and this map is compared with the corner wear width per each hob tooth. As a result, the features of the cutting conditions of the teeth at which large corner wear occurs, such as cutting volume and longitudinal sectional area, etc., are clarified.
