Semiconductor Integrated Optic Devices
1988
This chapter provides an overview of semiconductor integrated optics. The work in this field is motivated in part by the long-term desire to fabricate a variety of components on a common substrate. For example, Figure 6.1 shows a futuristic circuit formed on a direct-gap semiconductor that contains lasers, detectors, waveguides and modulators as well as an electronic circuit. Such a circuit could be useful in a variety of applications ranging from telecommunications to microwave systems to controls.
