Jaringan Islam Liberal (JIL): Its Anatomy and Legal Thinking A seminar in Bahasa Indonesia

2009
This seminar will examine the new Islamic liberalism movement initiated by Jaringan Islam Liberal (JIL) (Liberal Islam Network), a continuation of the liberal thinking of predecessors such as Harun Nasution and Nurcholish Madjid. The seminar will describe the origin and structure of the Islamic liberalism movement. It will then examine the basis of JIL’s legal thought and the methodology by which it tries to establish new Islamic legal thought. For this purpose, several references will be explored, including Menalar Firman Tuhan (trans. Al-Ittijah al-Aqli fi Al-Tafsir), by Nashr Hamid Abu Zayd; Islamic Perspectives on the New Millenium, by Virginia M. Hooker; Islamic Liberalism: A Critique of Development Ideologies, by Leonard Binder; and Liberal Islam: A Sourcebook, edited
