This is a massive textbook of cardiology, but it is equally a substantial contribution to internationalism. The editor, in a prime example of a successful amalgamation of two cultures, has taken a unique stance and served to bring world talent between a book's covers. The international intent is of course expressed in the title, but a foreword by Mrs Paul Dudley White and Dr White's portrait further enhance the global altruism. The author's Shanghai origins have facilitated contributions from China. These are not quaint, herbal medicine items but first-rate scientific articles. The "international" range reaches Thailand, South Africa, Russia, Canada, India, Argentina, England, France, Belgium, Israel, and Japan, and of course the remarkable international makeup of the United States is told in the surnames of the American contributors.
