Ultrapathologic study of metastatic lung cancer in brain

2012
The ultrapathologic characteristics of seven cases of metastatic lung cancer in brain including three cases of pulmonary adenocarcinoma, one case of neuroendocrine carcinoma, one case of brochioalveolar carcinoma, one case of squamous cell carcinoma and one undetermined were studied by using electron microscopic technique. The result indicates that the different types of metastatic lung cancer in brain remain its original ultrastructural features.Under the electron microscope, the pulmonary adenocarcinoma showed different density of microvilli on cell surface, typical intracytoplasmic microglandular cavity and cell junctions between adjacent cell membran;the pulmonary neuroendocrine carcinoma showed dense core neuroendocrine particles in different number and size in the cytoplasm;pulmonary cell carcinoma showed microvilli on cell surface and osmiophilic lamellar bodies in the cytoplasm. These characteristic appearances have great significance in clinical pathologic diagnosis and diffrential diagnosis.
