The object is that functional cortical and / or pathological areas can be represented and defined. The solution is characterized by the following steps: - the surface of a brain area (1) is detected pictorially by means of a thermal imaging camera (3), - the thermal images (101, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106) are continuously recorded as an image sequence for a few seconds to a few minutes, - the image sequence is supplied to a unit (17) for multivariate image analysis and there as a data cube (10) is subjected to multivariate analysis, - temperature different areas (18, 19) of the area of ​​the brain (1) to be lifted, - the thermal images (101, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106) are selectively reflected in the respective true microscopic image and / or recorded together with the preoperative image data.
