Prevalencia de erosión dental en niños de 6 a 12 años de edad utilizando el índice Basic Erosive Wear Examination (BEWE)

2021
Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence, distribution and severity of dental erosion in 6 to 12-year-old children from a public school in Lima, Peru. Material and methods: A random sample of 247 children from primary school was clinically examined for dental erosion using the Basic Erosive Wear Examination (BEWE) where a BEWE accumulative score was obtained and posteriorly compared to the index’s risk levels/clinical management table. Descriptive statistics analysis was applied for the variables presence of dental erosion, gender, age and site of erosion. Results: The prevalence of dental erosion was 9.31% and the mean and SE of BEWE index of erosion was 0.25±0.90. Conclusions: Dental erosion found in 6 to 12 year old children in this public school is lower compared to results from other epidemiological studies carried out in other schools worldwide. This type of epidemiological study could be viable in children of this age range in other places in Peru, where traditions, food habits and other factors vary significantly.
