Virtual-Reality Based Integrated Traffic Simulation for Urban Planning

2008
Transportation management and planning has played an important role in urban planning. The paper discusses the success of using virtual reality (VR) technique in traffic simulation to communicate design alternatives to decision makers and public audiences and thus to support the decision making process. The study documents the application of VISSIM, a microscopic simulation model, VR4MAX, an interactive virtual reality model, to analyze the current and future traffic flows of the East Pilgrim Street area in Newcastle upon Tyne. So it is valuable to simulate the future situation of three high level options which explored by City Council. The study will focus on the traffic flows of these options so as to help the Council make decision which is the "preferred option" for the area regeneration.
