Development of a technique for field packaging of damaged nuclear weapons

1987
A technique was developed for field packaging of damaged nuclear weapons for subsequent transportation to a Department of Energy facility. This procedure would be used at the accident site after the weapon has been inspected, after any fractured high explosive has been removed or stabilized by gelling, and any radioactive debris contained by packaging. The technique uses a rigid foam-in-place polyurethane foam carried in by the Accident Response Group along with shipping containers procured or fabricated at the accident site.
