Effect of Injection Timing on Performance and Emission Characteristics of Diesel Engine using Canola Emulsion Fuel

2016
Severe emission norms and atmosphere degradation owing to pollutants from the automotive vehicles lead us to discover the appropriate substitute for the diesel. Biodiesel is newly gaining prominence as an alternate for petroleum based diesel mainly suitable to environmental considerations. In Diesel engines combustion performance is depends upon the formation fuel-air mixture and it is obtained by mixing of fuel drops with air within the cylinder. In this issue, injection parameters such as injection timing and period, injection pressure and the number of the injection beams change the performance of combustion and mixture formation. This investigation presents the study on effect of deviation of fuel injection timing on performance and emission characteristics of diesel engine fuelled with canola biodiesel emulsion fuel. The canola biodiesel was prepared by transesterification process. The emulsion fuel is prepared by emulsification process contains of 83% of canola biodiesel, 15% of water, and 2% of surfactants (Span80 and Tween80) with the aid of a mechanical agitator. In this experimental work, the injection timing is retarded and advanced by 3o, from the set value of 24o before Top Dead Centre. From this study it has been observed that SFC, and smoke is reduced and HC, CO is increased with advanced 3oof injection timing from the original setting angle in the order of 17.3%, 8% and 16.6%,20% and combustion pressure, NOx are increased to 13%. The retardment of injecting timing by 3o created a negative improvement of the above parameter.
