Basic aspects of impurity gettering

Some basic aspects concerning impurity gettering in Si are discussed. A new type of terminology is introduced for classifying gettering mechanisms according to the driving force for gettering. Various parameters are shown to affect gettering processes. The combination of such parameters brings about a rich variety of gettering characteristics. Differences in the gettering of Cu and Fe impurities at various types of structural defects are demonstrated on the basis of such a discussion.
