A Novel Three-Layer Color-Modulating Optical Coating Non-volatile Display Structure based on Phase Change Material

A novel 3-layer color-modulating optical coating non-volatile display structure consists of a top indium tin oxide (ITO), a middle Ge 2 Sb 2 Te 5 (GST) and a bottom metal reflective layer (Pt) is fabricated and analyzed by both experiments and simulations. The tunable color characteristic is found to be similar to the conventional 4- layer ITO/GST/ITO/Pt structure for display. Compared to the 4-layer structure, the new 3-layer structure has additional benefits of lower manufacturing cost and lower power consumption thanks to the absence of the bottom ITO layer.
