Abatement and Degradation of Aqueous Solution of Nitrobenzene: Kinetic Parameters

2009
The work presented herein investigates the applicability of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in treatment wastewater containing nitroaromatics, specifically nitrobenzene (NB). The oxidation kinetics of nitrobenzene ozonation reaction were evaluated at different pH values. More than 90% reduction of 40 mg/L NB was achieved with ozone doses on the order of 1.2 g/L. Ozone rate law in aqueous solution was predicted to be second order. The overall kinetics was modeled as a second order, with first order with respect to both ozone and NB. At 25°C, the overall rate constant for NB ozonation was calculated to be 1.04 × 104 1/M.sec. A stoichiometric coefficient of 4 moles of O3 consumed per 1 mole of NB removed was calculated.
