Mammary-type myofibroblastoma of the larynx: A rare tumor of the head and neck

Abstract Background Mammary type-myofibroblastoma is a rare, benign tumor that is morphologically identical to myofibroblastoma of the breast. We describe, for the first time, a case of mammary-type myofibroblastoma arising in the larynx. Methods and results A 70 year-old man presented with dysphagia and dysphonia and was found to have a right vocal cord cystic-appearing lesion, which was surgically excised. Histologic examination showed short fascicles of spindle cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm, oval nuclei with fine chromatin and inconspicuous nucleoli, thick bundles of collagen, and peripherally located focal scattered adipocytes. Immunohistochemical staining was positive for CD34 and negative for MDM2, CDK4, ER, and PR. Conclusion We report the first rare case of a patient with a mammary-type myofibroblastoma of the larynx. While rare, it is important to consider this in the differential diagnosis when a spindle-cell tumor arises in the head and neck and to review the histopathological findings.
