ANTIHYPERLI PIDEMIC EFFECT OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF LEAVES OF TEPHROSIA PURPUREA LINN IN DEXAMETHASONE INDUCED RATS

2011
Tephrosia purpurea Linn. (family Fabaceae) is considered in system of folklore medic ine in the treatment of diabetes. The present experimental investigation established the lipid lowering properties of ethanolic extract of leaves of Tephrosia purpurea Linn. on experimentally Dexamethasone induced rats. The lipid parameters studied are Tot al cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL - C), High density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL - C), very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLD - C), Triglycerides and atherogenic index. Extract was administered orally for eight days at a dose of 600 and 1200 mg/kg in Dexamethasone induced rats. The level of TC, LDL - C, VLDL - C and triglycerides were reduced significantly. (p<0.001) while HDL - C level was significantly increased when compared to control groups of rats. In conclusion these suggested that ethanolic extract of leaves of Tephrosia purpurea Linn. can reduce the lipid levels significantly.
