Determinants of Long Term Diseases Suffering among the Elderly Population in Bangladesh

2017
The aim of this study was to assess the determinant factor of long-term diseases suffering among elderly in Bangladesh. For this, a community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in three villages of Pabna district, Bangladesh. Total of two hundred and fifty elderly populations aged 60 years was interviewed through a structured questionnaire. Both the bivariate and multivariate analyses were used to analyze data. We found most of the aged population (70%) have been suffering from the various types of long-term (>12 months) diseases. Age, partnership status, family type, number of families, number of family member, education, working status, family income and the use of the drug addiction were significantly associated with the suffering of long-term diseases. The result of the regression analysis indicates that age, partnership status, number of family member, present working status, family income and drug addiction were determinants of long-term diseases suffering. We recommend educating people and building more awareness about the geriatric health problems to overcome the burden of long-term maladies.
