Multi-stopband negative stiffness composite column design for vibration absorption

2019
Abstract This paper explores the basic mechanism of a multi-stopband negative stiffness composite column. The column consists of two parts: the base structure (concrete-filled steel tube (CFST)) and mass-spring-damper vibration absorbers (tungsten sphere-rubber). The local vibration absorbers create a wave “black hole” and guide waves into the energy-dissipating local vibration absorber under the resonant excited state. The efficiency of the multi-stopband negative stiffness composite column is verified via numerical testing. The results indicate that the resonance of the vibration absorber creates frequency stopbands that are influenced by the location, damping of the absorber, mass ratio, and stiffness ratio. Moreover, when the frequency of the local absorber is distributed around the natural frequency of the column, the vibration caused by earthquakes can be absorbed.
