Time and Volumetric Capnography

The applications of time and volumetric capnography continue to grow. This chapter provides a brief history of the measurements and makes the case for both time and volumetric capnography in terms of patient safety and as an important clinical tool in the acute care setting. It reviews the terminology and differences between mainstream and sidestream technologies. It highlights some of the better-known applications and compares time and volumetric capnography for a range of clinical applications. The chapter closes with a brief discussion of the future for the technology and derived and combined measurements.
