Allocated Academic Learning Time Revisited, or Beyond Time on Task

Clearly, student learning depends on how the available time is used, not just the amount of time available. Researchers at the Far West Laboratory initiated the idea of' Allocated Academic Learning Time in the Beginning Teacher Evaluation Study (BTES) (Fisher, Filby, Marliave, Cahen, Dishaw, Moore, & Berliner, 1978). Powell and Dishaw (in press), reporting data from the BTES, indicate that the Allocated Academic Learning Time for second graders ranged from 62-123 minutes per day, and for fifth graders from 49-105 minutes per day.
