The invention discloses an esterifying method and application thereof. The esterifying method disclosed by the invention comprises the steps of evenly mixing and stirring mercaptopropionic acid, a catalyst and methyl alcohol, standing to react after stirring is finished and then obtaining a product. According to a methyl mercaptopropionate preparation method disclosed by the invention, an esterification reaction temperature is slightly reduced and is reduced by 2 to 4 DEG C compared with a traditional esterification reaction temperature; furthermore, forced mixing is avoided in a standing reaction process, so that manpower and material resources are saved; along with reaction between the mercaptopropionic acid and the methyl alcohol, oil-phase methyl mercaptopropionate and water are generated to form a two-phase system; a water phase is lighter and rises slowly, and an oil phase is heavier and sinks slowly; as separation of the two phases cannot affect further contact reaction between the mercaptopropionic acid and the methyl alcohol, esterification reaction can be successfully performed until a balance system is formed and the whole esterificaiton reaction is finished. Furthermore, a conversion ratio of the whole standing esterification reaction is similar to that of traditional forced mixing and is slightly improved.
