Author response: Qualitative study of burnout, career satisfaction, and well-being among US neurologists in 2016

2018
We thank Dr. Sethi for the thoughtful discussion of our article. Our results highlighted both individual solutions and systemic solutions.1 It was not our intent to diminish the effect of individual solutions for burnout. Our work provided further evidence that burnout has a strong institutional or systemic basis that has only been highlighted in the last few years of burnout literature. A recent announcement by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) indicated that results such as ours have been impactful. The CMS Chief Medical Officer, Kate Gooderich, plans to conduct a “listening” tour of providers to reduce regulations while increasing the time spent with patients.2 We hope that this is the beginning of meaningful changes to reduce regulatory hassles for physicians.
