Topology optimization with space orientation of reinforcement

Abstract This study shows a new approach, which extends a conventional topology optimization algorithm to the possibility of local change of the material orientation. The developed approach perfectly suits to design structures made of anisotropic materials such as composites. The appearing on the market of 3D printers using technology of continues fiber placement make this type of optimization actual for modern engineering industry. The basis to obtain the gradient descent procedure is analyzed and several examples of optimization problems are demonstrated.
