A Miniaturized Band-Switching Multiband Dual-Polarized 5G mm-Wave Antenna-in-Package (AiP) Array for Cellular Phones

The design of a miniaturized band-switching multiband dual-polarized linear antenna-in-package (AiP) array consisting of 4 antenna elements is proposed for cellular phones with fifth generation mobile communications (5G) mm-Wave technologies. Based on |S nn | ≤ –10 dB in state #1, both the two polarizations (pol.) of the AiP array can cover from 27.21 GHz to 28.72 GHz and from 36.96 GHz to 40.17 GHz. The third generation partnership project (3GPP) bands n261 and n260 can hence be accommodated as the local main bands. The worst |S nn | values of both pol. for bands n257 in state #1 and n258 in state #2 are –6.14 dB and –6.31 dB, which both are better than –6.0 dB. Bands n257 and n258 can thus be covered as the roaming bands. The whole size of the AiP array is 0.84 mm × 4.20 mm × 19.20 mm, equivalently 0.068 λ o × 0.34 λ o × 1.55 λ o at 24.25 GHz.
