Effect of the atmosphere on the magnitude of phase delays of radio waves in earth-artificial satellite communication channels

1995
We derive computational expressions and obtain preliminary estimates of the values of the phase delays accumulated by radio signals used in communications channels of the earth to artificial earth satellite type in the presence of hydrometeors on the tropospheric segment of the radio link. Using both a model of meteorological phenomena (clouds and rain cells) and natural pluviographic measurements with a temporal resolution of 10 seconds, we propose a method for calculating the probability distribution of phase delay values in rain over long periods of time. Our method is based on statistical radiophysics data for attenuation of radio waves obtained from experimental radio links.
