The determination of roughness can have a wide variety of applications in the field of heritage science, from how the deterioration processes affect the materials surface, to the determination of the suitability of conservation treatments, both considering cleaning methods applied to the heritage asset, as well as consolidation and protection techniques of their surfaces. There are several techniques to determine materials roughness, but many of them must be performed in the laboratory and therefore it is necessary to move the heritage element to there, which it is not always possible. The portable roughness meter is a non destructive technique that allows the determination of the surface characteristics of an object at a micrometric scale and with a three-dimensional representation. Different applications of this technique in the field of heritage materials characterization and conservation are shown.
