Administrative Independence of the Ghanaian EC: A Mirage in the Lens of Informal Institutions?

2020
The Electoral Commission (EC) is the spine and heart of Ghana’s democratic governance and thus a dysfunction on the part of the EC through informal institution could erode Ghana’s democratic gains and set it on the path of democratic recession. The objective of the study was to explore the influence of informal relations on the administrative independence of the Electoral Commission of Ghana. The study adopted a qualitative research design (Interviews) and found that informal institutions have disastrous influence on the administrative role and independence of the Ghanaian EC, including the will to prosecute electoral offenders.
