Frequency Stability of Intentional Controlled Islanding Scheme in the Future European Synchronous Transmission Grid

2021
Intentional Controlled Islanding (ICI) dictates the disconnection of transmission lines to create stable islands out of an otherwise unstable interconnected system. This work evaluates the frequency stability of the ICI applied to the European synchronous transmission system. Three scenarios 2020, 2030 and 2040 are developed for this purpose. They display a high penetration of renewable energy and large power exchange between regions because of grid expansion. An optimization algorithm is used to find the optimal islands for each hour and each scenario. The results show that the ICI delivers frequency-stable islands in Europe for a wide range of operating conditions in current and future scenarios.
