2T3C HCA, a new hollow cylinder device using Digital Image Correlation to measure properties of interfaces between asphalt layers

2020
Abstract To improve pavement resistance, asphalt concrete layers are bonded together with a tack coat. A new device has been developed to describe the mechanical behavior of interfaces between asphalt concrete layers. The 2T3C Hollow Cylinder Apparatus (2T3C HCA) can apply torsion and tension-compression to hollow cylinder samples composed of two asphalt concrete layers with a tack coat in between. Normal and shear stresses can be applied independently with any type of loading (monotonic or cyclic). In addition to global measurements, a local optical method, based on Digital image correlation (DIC), is used to observe the deformation of the interface. The first interface characterization results are presented in this paper.
