The invention provides a mobile terminal and a point-to-point connection retention method. The mobile terminal comprises a detection unit and a communication unit, wherein the detection unit is used for detecting whether data traffic exists between the mobile terminal and an application server when the mobile terminal enters a dormancy state; and the communication unit is used for transmitting a heartbeat data packet to the application server when the data traffic is not detected within a preset time range by the detection unit. According to the technical scheme provided by the invention, when the mobile terminal does not operate the application program with a function of transmitting the heartbeat data packet, a point-to-point connection retention state between the mobile terminal and the application server can be still retained; and in addition, power consumption of the terminal can be saved.
