Effect of the type of solvent on properties of graft copolymer solutions of cellulose diacetate with polystyrene and their mixtures

1981
Abstract As a result of investigating by thermodynamic methods graft copolymer solutions of cellulose diacetate and polystyrene and their mixtures several features were established, which are typical of graft copolymers containing segments of different chemical structure. It was established that the behaviour of graft copolymers in solution is determined basically by the incompatibility of main and lateral chains. Using the Tager method and the Scott equation according to the Flory-Huggins theory, parameters of interaction of polymers with each other were calculated from sorption data and it was shown that the degree of compatibility of cellulose diacetate and polystyrene depends to a marked extent on the chemical structure of the solvent.
