[Sex education program in the outpatient family planning department of UNICAMP: its contribution to quality of care]

1989
The evaluation of 15 sex education groups in Brazil that 124 women enrolled in 87 started and 71 completed in 1987 49 of whom were assessed is presented. The groups met once a weeks for 4 weeks and they consisted of 10 patients and 2 educators who applied the Pilseti model to alleviate their sexual complaints. Consultation on an individual basis was also offered with a medical sexologist. Most of the women were aged 20-29 (51.6%) used IUDs (50.8%) and were uninformed about sex prior to their first experience *71.8%). Among the 49 women evaluated 24.5% complained of a lack of sexual desire 49.0% had no orgasm and 22.4% had both complaints. After participation in the program 14 women stated that their problem had been completely resolved 33 reported a partial improvement and 2 registered lack of improvement. Before taking part in the program 46.9% of the 49 women thought that the contraceptive method they used was directly related to their sexual complaints but after the program only 8.2% opined that there was a direct connection between the two. The results indicate that this model based on a therapy of short duration is more effective than the traditional approach since only 9 of 49 women (18.4%) turned to a traditional sexual therapist and only 4 (8.2%) needed psychotherapy.
