Design of a Multi-Stage Axial Turbine within the scope of complete System Design, Manufacturing and Operation of a new Turbine Propulsion Simulator (TPS)

This paper presents the mechanical design, manufacturing and usage of a turbine propulsion simulator (TPS) for airframe testing (DNW). The focus lies on the aerothermal axial turbine design (DLR) to given specification, using mainly fast predesign methods and multi-objective optimization before final 3D CFD calculations. The turbine was successfully mechanically designed and manufactured, together with the complete TPS unit (NLR). The full design, manufacturing and operation capability for TPS systems is completed by the described turbine design work. Major challenges and solutions in the process are presented.
