Performance of sheep fed processed poultry excreta as protein supplement

1992
Poultry excreta collected from a deep litter poultry house was deep-stacked alone or ensiled with poor quality hay (Rhodes/kikuyu grass). The processing improved the palatabilqity of the excreta and the performance of sheep fed the excreta-containing diets. The animals fed deep-stacked poultry excreta and hay had average daily gain of 98 g and improved feed efficiency. Feeding of hay alone resulted in loss of weight and poor feed efficiency. This study indicates that poultry excreta can be processed economically and the nutrients can be used to supplement poor quality hay
