Range Doppler Migration Synthesis for Realistic Radar Target Simulation

2021
Automotive radar sensors play a vital role in the current evolvement of autonomous driving. Their ability to detect objects in range and velocity makes them indispensable for environment sensing tasks in autonomous cars. As their operational behavior must be tested and verified, a test environment with the ability to simulate real world scenarios is required. Radar target simulators (RTS) are capable of performing end-of-line, over-the-air validation tests by looping back a received and afterwards modified radar signal. However, currently available RTS systems lack the ability to generate authentic radar targets with respect to their characteristics of range Doppler migration (RDM). The paper at hand presents a method to synthesize the RDM phenomenon for RTS and compares the results thereof with a radar measurement.
