Microbial cellulose: production and application

2019
Abstract Microbial cellulose (biocellulose or bacterial cellulose) gained plenty of attention due to its unique physiochemical properties in comparison to plant cellulose. Tremendous potential for production of vital products in food, textile, nonwoven cloth, paper, films, synthetic fiber coating, medicine, biomedical, electronic, agriculture, etc. has been well documented in the literature. However, very little is known about synthesis and low-cost production of microbial cellulose and need to be explored. This chapter compiles available information from intense research on microbial cellulose, focusing on cost-effective and large-scale cellulose production through the biosynthetic process. This review also discusses its potential applications in various industries, taking into consideration current practices of the fermentation process of microbial cellulose.
