RECOMMENDED PERFORMANCE OF A LANE CHANGE CRASH AVOIDANCE SYSTEM (CAS) DRIVER INTERFACE, WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO SYSTEM RELIABILITY

1997
An effectiveness estimation model is presented for a lane change crash avoidance system (CAS) to support driver lane change decisions. A sensitivity analysis is then carried out to determine the impact on possible CAS effectiveness as model parameters vary. Effectiveness is defined as the percent of crashes avoided if all vehicles were equipped with the hypothetical CAS technology. Results indicate that the manner in which the driver interacts with the CAS can have substantial effects on the potential benefits that such systems may provide. Finally, recommended performance of a lane change CAS driver interface from the standpoint of hazard detection is addressed in light of the results. For the covering abstract, see IRRD 490001.
