Preoperative Embolization and Laser-Assisted Microsurgery of Intracranial Meningiomas

1989
The reduction of tumor vascularity and the use of surgical techniques to achieve hemostasis are necessary to decrease risks for patients with highly vascular tumors. In our study we present a combined management of preoperative embolization and laser-assisted microsurgery in patients with intracranial meningiomas. This treatment was performed in 12 hypervasculaized meningiomas with a dual arterial supply of meningeal and cortical or pial vessels. Six tumors were meningiomas of convexity, four of the sphenoid wing, and two were located parasagittally. On histological examination, eight meningiomas were classified as endotheliomatous, two as angioblastic, and two as mainly fibromatous.
