The effect of grain size on the mechanical properties of AMC-SC1

2004
Australian Magnesium Corporation, in collaboration with the Cooperative Research Centre for Cast Metals Manufacturing (CAST) and Magnesium Elektron Limited, has developed a magnesium alloy, AM-SC1, which has been specifically designed for engine block applications. This alloy has been used for the engine block of the Genois LE turbo charged diesel injection motor developed by AVL List [2]. AM-SC1 was developed for sand or permanent mould casting processes, and the mechanical properties may be optimised by the use of an appropriate heat treatment. However, the grain size achieved during casting also significantly affects both the strength and creep resistance. To ensure that a uniform grain size is achieved, irrespective of the thickness of the cast section, a grain refining agent is included in the alloy composition. The level of addition determines the grain size and, ultimately, the mechanical properties of the casting.
