Development of ion‐ion collisions at KSU

2008
A facility to study collisions between multiply charged ions is being developed. Ions from the KSU CRYEBIS will be collided with ions from a new 5 GHz ECR ion source. A major difficulty in ion‐ion collision experiments is that the ion beams are very tenuous. We attempt to overcome this problem by decelerating the ECR ions before the collison. Modelling and design of the ion‐optics of the collision region has been completed. The facility should be operational sometime in 1993. Our initial experiments will examine resonant or quasi‐resonant charge exchange processes where both the fast EBIS ions and the slow ECR ions change charge state.
