Enhancement of titanium heat and wear resistance by complex electrical explosion alloying of surface

2002
In operating with titanium details under conditions of high temperature oxidation the cinder-forms, which is not protective one and has low mechanical properties. It was shown a possibility of pulse alloying of titanium alloys by fusing surface with the products of the aluminum foil electrical explosion. This method allows one to design protective layers with the thickness of several tens of micrometers. Layers obtained by traditional methods of diffusion metal plating have the same thickness. Along with it, on exposure to the surface of oxidizing hostile environment under conditions of simultaneous wearing the electric explosion aluminizing can appear to be ineffective. The layers formed based on titanium aluminide possessing enhanced heat resistance, have low firmness and high fragility. In the given paper the. possibilities of complex electrical explosion alloying titanium in order to create protective layers tolerant both to high temperature oxidation and also to wearing were investigated.
