Dermatologic, Infectious, and Nail Disorders

2020
Abstract Objective to review the common dermatologic and infectious conditions of the foot. Background athletes and active patients commonly present to sports medicine providers with a spectrum of conditions involving the skin of the foot or toenails, which vary greatly in their severity and potential for interfering with health and performance. Main ideas the conditions are organized into two main categories: mechanical or stress related, and infectious. Stress-related skin conditions are usually diagnosed clinically, and treatment options range from simple observation to surgical options in unusual circumstances. Infectious etiologies require an understanding of the common pathogens and treatment options. Both fungal and bacterial causes may be treated with topical or oral medications, depending on clinical factors. Delays in the diagnosis of bacterial infections are most problematic. Conclusion primary care and orthopedic sports medicine providers should be familiar with the common dermatologic and infectious conditions of the foot in order to optimize the active patient’s health and performance.
