Achieving Multifunctionality by Combining Thermometry With Other Luminescence Applications

The huge variety of applications for luminescence facilitates the development of luminescence multifunctional and smart materials and devices, which can be further used in many critical and game-changing technologies. This chapter provides an overview of several applications of luminescence which can be combined with luminescence thermometry to provide materials and devices with polyvalent functions. Initially, the concept of multifunctional and smart materials is presented along with their potential role in the economies and technologies of the near future. The chapter goes on to give brief descriptions of physical, chemical, and structural sensing techniques based on the use of luminescence. The selection of applications is made based on their close relations with luminescence temperature sensing and includes sensing of pressures, electric and magnetic fields, evaluation of structural and compositional changes in materials via luminescence, and chemical sensing. The chapter finishes with examples of multifunctional bioimaging and thermal imaging.
