Integrated system and network management for GIG communications transport operations

2004
DoD requires an integrated, scaleable, fully distributed information processing and transport infrastructure that moves information from any source to any destination. However, the evolution of the GIG has produced a compilation of communications transport capabilities that are currently managed as a loose confederation of sometimes networked elements with no central authority, oversight or guidance. This confederation inhibits the development or rapid deployment of the transformational information superiority capability and net-centric warfare operations envisioned in Joint Vision 2020. The GIG requires end-to-end management, control and optimization, providing assured service to senior leaders, commanders and warfighters at all levels. This paper addresses the strategy and process DISA is taking to satisfy the requirements of that task. The strategy involves a two level process. The first level requires implementing off the shelf reporting applications. The second requires the development of service level agreements, optimized for each reporting system's unique features and capabilities.
